Giving a wine gift is often a fun and exhilirating process. There are so many choices. What type of wine to give? How much should you spend? Should the gift be from a large winery, or a smaller boutique style winery? Lastly, where should the gift be from? Many American consumers, even those of German descent, wouldn’t think to give a wine gift from Germany. That’s unfortunate because Germany is the current world wide quality leader in the Riesling grape, which among all white wine grapes might give the best combination of acidity and fruit. The Mosel region of Germany is an especially interesting place, given it’s ultra cool day time temperatures which are lowered even further by the wind ripping off the Mosel river which runs directly through the growing region. Only a unique combination of very elevated vineyards and shail soil help the region to achieve ripeness in even the warmest years.
